Application Process for design studies (BA)
For the exact date of the qualifying examination at the TH Nuremberg please see the german page.
Admittance
Applicants must verify the academic qualifications. Also a certain level of artistic and creative talent must be displayed and verified by applicants. Our qualifying examination consists of an assessment based on a portfolio, a practical assessment and a colloquium.
Portfolio
Content
Work samples (portfolio) must consist of 30 to 40 self-created pieces. Topics are chosen by the candidates themselves. If work samples mostly consist of movies and animated films, fewer pieces can be submitted. Possible samples for pre-selection include:
- Drawings, paintings, print makings, texts, form and color studies, photography, typographic and calligraphic or work applied advertisements
- Plastic works should be submitted in photographical form
- Movies and animation (Quicktime), digital systems (HTML resp. independently executable player), (digital) picture compositions (pdf, jpg) should be submitted on CD-ROM in formally named formats
Appendix
In addition a complete portfolio, candidates must attach a signed oath of declaration certifying that the submitted portfolio was created by the applicant only without help of any third parties. It is also critical to note the candidate’s exact participation on the given work sample should its conception be the result of combined individual effort. In these cases, candidates are required to clearly note which elements (picture/photo text, etc) inserted in the work arise from the candidate him/herself.
Usage of pictures found on the internet is strictly forbidden.
Portfolio design
Due to technical reasons, portfolios may not surpass a format of 55 by 75cm (21,5’’ by 29,5’’) and should not be heavier than 5kg. Work samples must be well-protected by a folder which should protect work from damage by dropping (we don´the Design Faculty does not accept any responsibility for damages incurred to your work samples or folder). Name and address of the applicant must be clearly visible on the outside of the folder.
The samples are evaluated by a grading system regarding conception, originality and the quality of work. Achieving a certain level of points qualifies the applicant for further assessment.
Tip: Visit the portfolio exhibition of Design Faculty to see sample-portfolios of former candidates whose presented work samples led acceptance to the TH Nuremberg.
Please note: The portfolio does not replace the online application (please see the point application below). Portfolios can be only accepted after a successful online application.
Qualifying examination
After pre-selection, chosen candidates are informed in writing and will also be invited to a two-day qualifying examination at the TH Nuremberg.
The exact date can be found on the german page.
Practical tasks in the field of typography, either drawing or photography, the conception of a storyboard as well as a design-related written test must be fulfilled for a successful examination.
Every section of the examination is evaluated independently. This is due to the possible compensation of a weaker section result with a stronger one. Criteria for evaluation of the different part examinations are presented and discussed extensively directly before the examination.
