Creativity: Can you make it a habit?

13.07.2021

Ok, I know what you think: why would you put 'creativity' and 'habit' in a same sentence. They even sound like opposites! But in reality, they work hand in hand.

Creativity is a weird concept, and very difficult to understand. The formal definition is 'the use of imagination or original ... ideas to create something; inventiveness.'

One would think, creativity comes from inside and is a part of who you are: you are either a creative person, or you're not; and that's what most people get wrong. It usually comes from the outside! Let's think of creativity as a muscle: you need to work on it, 'train', and little by little you get stronger. Same goes with motivation btw, but that's a different topic

How do you train it? Simple: start your research, become 'obsessed' with your favourite artists or people that inspire you, learn their techniques and methods, and practice, practice, practice... Don't copy them though!

Good, now that we defined what creativity is and what it is not, where does the 'habit' part come along? Well of course, as a 'muscle we need to train', we need to develop a habit on training it. And that's the difficult part, because not everyone is willing to give up some hours or minutes of their busy days just to practice on something.

But also, that's your advantage! Be the change you want to see in the world :)

Sopaipillas: Chileans' bread for when it rains.

11.07.2021

As promised in my last post, the best Chilean recipe to make with your loved ones. I hope you are prepared! I know it's not what you would expect on a website like this, but I couldn't have a blog and not write my favorite Chilean recipe :) So get all your ingredients and lets get started...

Ingredients

250 ml pumpkin puree

250 gr. flour without baking powder.

1 teaspoon of salt.

75 gr. of melted butter.

3 gr. of baking powder.

500 ml. liter of oil for frying.

Preparation

1. Boil the pumpkin cut in cubes with 3/4 of water to soften and grind until it becomes a puree.

2. Put the flour, baking powder and salt on a work surface.

3. Incorporate the melted butter forming a kind of volcano in the center of the flour mixture.

4. Add the pumpkin and knead.

5. Stretch the dough with a rolling pin until it has an estimated thickness of 5 millimeters.

6. Cut the dough with a round object.

7. Prick the formed sopaipillas with a fork.

8. Pour the oil into a pot and let it heat up to at least 180C.

9. Drop the sopaipillas carefully, tossing one to see if it hardens and rises.

10. Remove them when they are sufficiently hard and cooked.

11. Place the sopaipillas in a bowl with absorbent paper to remove excess oil.

How to eat them

With whatever you like! But the typical is: pebre (my favorite), mustard, honey, jam, or with panela to make them 'sopaipillas pasadas'. You're welcome :)

Things in Chile that inspire me

09.07.2021

Well, here we go. I know that few people know my country (and even if they did, we all have a different perception of our surroundings, so it wouldn't do much good either). So, I thought it would be fun to write my top 3 things about Chile that inspire me (3, to keep it short)...

#1

Definitely if I'm looking for inspiration in La Serena, the first thing I'll do is grab my bike and head to the beach. There's no better feeling than riding along the beach with your bike when the sun is setting, and letting your mind wander while you listen to the sounds of the ocean.

#2

If I'm in Santiago, just walking around the city and seeing the giant buildings around me is enough for me. It might sound basic, but I promise you that if you sit in a cafe near the city center, you won't get bored watching people running around, each one with their own story.

#3

Ok, so far, I've put some pretty 'basic' stuff. But there is no better inspiration creator, than being surrounded by your loved ones in the kitchen and preparing sopaipillas together when it starts to rain. And in the end the best reward of all: eating them together! Next post will be about how to cook the best sopaipillas, so don't miss it!
